Common Storm Systems in the Northern New Jersey
Here in northern New Jersey our climate is diverse and can be quite different from what is happening in the southern New Jersey region. New Jersey can be divided into five main climate zones, which can experience different weather events throughout the year. Bergen County is located in the central New Jersey climate zone, but shares a border with the north climate zone. This exposes our area to weather events that occur in both regions. Around the summer season thunderstorms can be quite common and are largely responsible for most of the rainfall received throughout the year, but cyclones are becoming more frequent each year as the average temperature is increasing slowly every year. Due to most of our county being somewhat flat, certain communities during these warm rainy months are at risk of to flooding potentially causing damage to homes and commercial properties. .
Since we are located on the border of the northern and central climate zones, our winters can be pretty different then the areas south of us. This exposes us to shifts between freezing and non-freezing temperatures, which affects how much snow fall we get. We tend to get more snow than most of the state with the northern climate zone being the only exception. On average we can expect to get anywhere between 23-27 inches of snow annually. Depending on how extreme a winter storm can be can cause tree limbs to break along ice damming on roofs potentially damaging property.
